Conscious of the importance of libraries and librarian`s profession to the education, science and culture, to the exchange of informations and ideas, to the maintaining and development of civilization, in the spirit of the principles of human and professional ethics, Serbian Library Association establishes the following rules:

• A librarian`s duty is to serve the knowledge and universal human right to education, science and culture.

• A librarian bases his/her relationship with a user on the right and respect, regardless of the one`s racial, national, religious, political and class affiliations, and, at the same time, he/she protects the user`s right to privacy.

• A librarian provides the highest level of services, engages in the free flow of information and excludes all types of censorship.

• A librarian professionaly fills out library collections, promptly processes library material, saves it and takes care of its protection and enables the complete availability of publications and informations.

• A librarian is open for new knowledge and users` needs and constantly undergoes professional training.

• A librarian respects his/her colleagues and gives them professional and human support and help.

• A librarian provides the importance and preserves the reputation, dignity and interest of the proffesion and the institution and intercedes in favour of its better status.

• A librarian does not misuse his/her profession nor position for personal benefit and does not cause damage to the user or the institution.

• Serbian Library Associationis obliged to give human, legal and material support to the librarian who has difficulties due to obeying the rules of this Code of ethics.

Serbian Library Association`s Court of Honour monitors, supports or disputes the application of this Code.
